Expert Hocus Pocus by Alton C. Sharpe
A book of very solid magic that is notable for documenting several routines from the nightclub era. Sharpe details his entire rope routine, Linking Rings, a lovely ring to flower transformation, elaborations on The Vanishing Bird Cage and much more. The book also features a particularly strong section on cards that explains Marlo’s Perfection Switch, Sharpe’s Cards to Pocket routine, a cards across, and a very impressive trick with four Aces by Harry Riser. Sharpe was evidently a bit of a mysterious figure who may have invented an alter ego called Alan Keith. The February 2005 Genii also has an intriguing piece about Sharpe’s connection to Jack Ruby around the time that Ruby shot Lee Harvey Oswald. Paper back, 173 pages. Originally published, 1961. This paperback version published by Tannen’s in 1973.
