This fascinating book is a compendium of information on hundreds of magic-related topics, including methods, history and general subjects. In looking at methodology the book examines entire classes of tricks, for example: fish catching, flower production, four ace tricks, and forcing--to name just a few found by flipping through the F’s. The volume is useful as a cross-section of magical history and methods up to the time of its publication in 1949 and is a good source for magic that may be ripe for revival today. It includes many short biographical entries on magicians, everyone from Houdini and Thurston to Ludwig Leopold Doebler and Wiljalba Frikell. Cyclopedia of Magic was edited by Henry Hay, who later wrote the influential Amateur Magician’s Handbook, yet many of the entries were excerpted from works by other notable magicians, including Houdini, Thurston, T. Nelson Downs, Eddie Joseph, and David Devant. This is an excellent resource that is dense with a very wide range of information useful to anyone with an interest in magic. In good condition, includes dust jacket. The spine of the jacket and the first inside leaf are marked with three small letters that were part of a cataloguing system used by a previous owner. The dust jacket has some minor chipping along the edges (see photo) but otherwise in excellent condition throughout. Hardcover, 498 pp, 1949.
