David Blaine to Make 40-Stop North American Theatrical Tour Starting May 30

3/27/2017

March 27, 2017 -- This summer David Blaine will make a 40-stop tour of theatres across North America for an extensive series of live theatrical performances. The tour starts May 30 in San Diego and ends July 23 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Blaine became one of the world's most recognized and influential magicians through a series of television specials but has only occasionally performed in theatres. Although he made a short tour of Asia and the Middle East in August and September of 2014, this will be Blaine's first tour in North America. Notably, the tour does not include any performances in Blaine's home town of New York City. New Yorkers who are determined to see Blaine's show may want to plan a road trip to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, which appears to be the stop closest to this area.
Magic in New York plans on updating this story with more detailed information when available, however, in the meantime, what follows is drawn from excerpts from today's press release announcing the tour.

LOS ANGELES, March 27, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Having revolutionized modern magic and mesmerized audiences unlike any performer in history, magician, illusionist, and stunt artist David Blaine will embark on his first-ever North American tour, announced today.  Produced by Live Nation, the 40-city tour launches on May 30 in San Diego, CA and will include shows throughout North America with stops in New Orleans, Santa Barbara, Colorado Springs, Milwaukee, culminating on July 23 in Albuquerque, NM,

Blaine's one-man show brings his unique brand of entertainment, promising to be an unforgettable interactive experience that both shocks and amuses. An experiment in and of itself, the tour will evolve as it moves across the country as Blaine continues to push the limits and attempt new feats for the first time live in front of his audiences. No two shows will be exactly the same, and tickets go on sale Friday, March 31st at LiveNation.comand on the Live Nation app.

Described by Howard Stern as the greatest magician that ever lived, David Blaine single-handedly redefined magic after producing and directing his original television special Street Magic when he was just twenty-three, which Penn Jillette of Penn & Teller called "the best TV magic special ever done." The New York Times noted that Blaine has "taken a craft that's been around for hundreds of years and done something unique and fresh with it," whilst The New Yorker claimed "he saved magic."

Over the last two decades, Blaine's nine primetime specials have seen him being buried alive in New York City for a week, encased inside a six-ton block of ice for three days, survived standing atop a 100ft tall pillar in Bryant Park for 36 hours without a safety net, endured 44 days inside a transparent box in London on nothing but water, and had over one million volts discharged at him continuously for 72 hours from seven Tesla coils. Blaine also spent one week submerged in a sphere-shaped aquarium at Lincoln Center, before breaking the world record for breath holding live on the Oprah Winfrey show where he held his breath for over 17 minutes.

Adam Blumenthal, the owner of Tannen's magic store, participates in a lengthy interview on the podcast Magical Thinking. Adam speaks about a wide range of topics that relate to the New York City magic scene and the history of magic in New York. He discusses the heritage of Tannen's as well as his own involvement with the store prior to owning it and his concept of the role that the store plays in educating magicians. He also talks about his work as a lighting designer, including stories about working with Ricky Jay, Derek DelGaudio and other magicians. Adam also discusses at length his own ideas and concepts of magic. Tannen's is an important nexus of activity in the New York magic scene, and it is intriguing to listen to the thoughtful and contemplative perspectives of the person who is keeping it vital decades after it was founded. Although Blumenthal is the focus of the interview he is joined in the conversation by magician Ricky Smith. The Magical Thinking podcast is presented by The Art of Magic and is hosted by Elliott Terral. Other New York based magicians who have appeared on the podcast recently are Harrison Greenbaum, Steve Cohen, Doug McKenzie, and Tony Chang.

Mystery, dexterity, comedy and virtuoso variety skills will be on hand April 8 at the Salute to Magic, presented at the Queens Theatre in New York by the Parent Assembly of the Society of American Magicians. The diverse bill of entertainers includes the headline act, Scott and Puck; veteran magician Denny Haney (who is also Master of Ceremonies); Alexander Boyce, an up-and-coming conjuror gaining recognition in New York; and Will Shaw a talented juggler and all around variety artist. The Assembly will also present its Magician of the Year award to Rene Clement. For a link to purchase tickets and directions to the Queens Theatre, click here.

"These performers have received international acclaim," said Nina Schindler, who is producing the show for the Parent Assembly, "but most of them rarely perform here in New York. The Salute to Magic provides the opportunity to experience the excitement of live magic in an intimate venue that is perfect for variety entertainment."

The Parent Assembly of the Society for American Magicians has presented an annual show since 1909. Over the years it has featured some of the world's most renowned conjurors, including Dunninger, Houdini, Dai Vernon, and Cardini. Now known as the Salute to Magic, the event generates revenue that supports the year-round activities of the Assembly.

Denny Haney, (Master of Ceremonies) toured the world with his stage show from 1972 to 1990 and also has performed extensively at corporate events for Fortune 500 companies. He currently performs regularly at the Magic Castle and at a variety of magic conventions while also running his popular magic shop in Baltimore.

Will Shaw's unique blend of physical comedy, verbal wit and dazzling skill has taken him across the country and around the world. Performing in venues as diverse as the stages of major symphony orchestras and theaters to those of schools, colleges, camps, resorts, business events and even TV and movies, he has created a universally appealing style, irresistible to audiences of all ages. Shaw is the winner of the Bistro Award from Backstage, the theatrical trade paper, as one of New York City's top cabaret performers. Nationally he is recognized from commercials for Pizza Hut, IBM, Carvel, Burger King, Anderson Consulting and Terra Internet. He has performed on The Late Show with David Letterman, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and Sesame Street with the number Two (a big loveable number two). Internationally, he has taken his show to Japan, Thailand, Liberia, Jamaica, Panama, England and Canada. He is affiliated with New York's Big Apple Circus, representing them at a variety of special events and has been an instructor for the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus Clown College.

Alexander Boyce’s performances have been called “fun,” “classy,” and “astounding.” His performances are in demand at performing arts centers, banquets, colleges, theaters, corporations, home parties and everywhere in between. Alexander has worked his magic for top businesses and colleges such as the Dick’s Sporting Goods Open, Norfolk Marriott Waterside, and Bryn Mawr College (PA). His magic has even been seen on the “Today Show” on NBC.

Scott and Puck (headliners) are comedian magicians who use their artform of laughter and amazement to spark a dialogue about what’s going on in the world today. As an added bonus, they always amaze with their offbeat illusions, out of the box stunts, and smart comedy. They were both finalists on Americas Got Talent, are current contributors to the Huffington Post and were featured on Penn & Teller's Fool Us on the CW network.

Rene Clement has been deeply immersed in the New York City magic community for decades. As a 35-year member of Parent Assembly he has contributed to the organization on many fronts, most recently as a board member and as the group's comptroller. He is an accomplished comedy magican who performs regularly at a variety of New York City venues and has also appeared on a wide range of television programs, including the Today Show.

George Schindler, the national Dean of the Society of American Magicians, will be awarded the Academy of Magical Arts's Lifetime Achievement Fellowship at a ceremony in Los Angeles on April 2. Created in 1985, the Lifetime Achievement Fellowship is given to a person whose entire life has been dedicated to magic, either as a performer, a preservationist or a historian. Magic Castle co-founder William W. Larsen, Jr. received the first presentation, followed by Don Lawton, Castle co-founder Milt Larsen, Francis Marshall and others. "It's a great honor to be in such wonderful company," said Schindler when asked how felt about receiving the honor. Tom Ogden, Vice-Chair of the AMA's Board of Trustees, will present the award.

The Academy of Magical Arts is the nonprofit organization which operates The Magic Castle, a private club for magicians in Hollywood, California. Each year it presents a series of awards recognizing achievement in magic. The Lifetime Achievement Fellowship and the AMA's other awards will be presented this year at the Orpheum Theater in Downtown, Los Angeles.

As Dean of the national Society of American Magicians, Schindler represents the face of magic nationally and internationally. For decades he also has been deeply involved with the local New York City chapter." In Addition to his active schedule as a performer, Dean Schindler has always made  time to keep Parent Assembly #1 of the Society of American Magicians thriving," said Robert Braun President of the Assembly. "He has served for years as a trustee, and in that capacity helps to assist fellow magicians in need, and to keep our Assembly in the forefront of magic in New York. We in Parent Assembly are priviledged to have Dean Schindler as one of our own, and we congratulate him on this well deserved honor."

George Schindler is an American stage magician, magic consultant, comedian, actor, ventriloquist and writer based in New York. He has been a fixture on the magic scene, on TV, in film and performing at venues around the world. He serves as the Lifetime Dean of the Society of American Magicians, founded The School for Magicians in the ’70s, and has penned several noted books on the art of magic. Among his many other performances and accomplishments includes an appearance as a magician in the Woody Allen film Oedipus Wrecks.
